As a challenge to envision “what’s next in home appliances”, the idea was to design for downsizing baby boomers in the year 2025. Living in the city and hoping to maximize their smaller footprint, concepts needed to find ways to not compromise on creature comforts or capabilities. Looking into future housing trends, developing technologies, and ever-changing demographic needs, the goal was to highlight design opportunities for future kitchen platforms. During my time at GE, I spent significant time bringing new cooking products to market. This gave me incredible insight into various consumers, cooking technologies, and systems. I wanted to use this intimate knowledge to explore how unique combinations of existing and emerging technologies might shape the future for the GE cooking team.
A bright future for the cooking enthusiast.

Today’s kitchens typically consist of large, independent appliances. The paradigm of “one appliance per need” (eg cleaning, cooking, storage, etc.) is challenged by smaller living spaces and the increasing demand for more efficient lifestyles. In regards to cooking, how might an oven, a microwave, a cooktop, and various countertop gadgets be combined into a more compact system? The goal was to explore concepts that still felt familiar (nothing from The Jetsons) but creatively combined these cooking capabilities into a smaller, smarter product. The design needed to emphasize the growing demands of a smaller living space, while introducing exciting new features that could facilitate the modern cooking experience.
It should be smarter and smaller yet still feel familiar.

No wires and no plugs. These innovative accessories leverage their power from the cooktop’s induction technology, and replace the need for many familiar countertop appliances. Similar to induction pots and pans, the integrated feet provide the necessary connection to power your new favorite appliance.
It works like magic.

As kitchen trends evolve, the appliances are no longer taking center stage. It’s all about the cabinetry, countertops, and overall finishes coming together for a personalized environment. Providing both form and function, the induction cooktop not only allows cookware to function anywhere, its crystal clear cooking surface allows the beauty of the underlying countertop material to shine through. Placing the induction elements below the countertop is a breakthrough configuration that allows for a stunningly unique and transparent design. The appliance almost disappears and seems to occupy less visual real estate within the kitchen.
The trend is all about blending in.
