Removing digital hurdles in audio and connectivity experiences. Honeywell

Honeywell’s Sensing and Productivity group delivers scanning and logistics solutions for companies across the world. They aim to provide real-time safety data, increase worker productivity, and enrich operational intelligence. Their team experienced a wave of strategic growth through numerous brand acquisitions. This left them with a very disjointed yet extensive product portfolio spanning retail, medical, and industrial applications. They needed a new design language and consistent brand message to tie everything together. Encompassing both digital and physical design, the challenge was to harness the same durability and quality associated with the Honeywell brand, but through more refined and considered details. The end deliverable was a 300+ page design toolkit Honeywell could use to ensure design consistency across all current and future product platforms. Shaping the future of the industry standard. The essence of the visual brand language was balance. The simplified forms still needed to maintain tank-like durability and embrace three key design principles - rugged, refined, and ready. Each product started from a primitive square or circle. The honesty in those shapes spoke to efficiency and reinforced Honeywell's brand message. The use of complex geometry was only introduced to blend two forms together or accommodate for overall ergonomics. Rather than traditional rubber bumpers and overt styling, considered materiality and design details created a more integrated means of protection for sensitive components. The overall aesthetic focused heavily on functionality, with the exception of one signature element - a touch of red. The use of red was a subtle nod to Honeywell's logo and legacy. It only appeared in small reveals and represented the Honeywell brand being at the core of every device. A new take on rugged, refined, and ready. Planning for expansion and modularity was critical. Many of the devices had peripheral accessories and scalable hardware components. Accessory handles, lanyard straps, a stylus, external batteries, vehicle mounting points - these were some of the key design criteria that needed to be considered. Finding ways to integrate core functionality without compromising the simplified form language was a big design challenge. It was unlikely every design variation would result in a seamless and considered overall form. Rather than complex surface details, linear parting lines and planar mating surfaces were used to ensure these elements would come together with a more intentional approach. Trying to cover all the bases. Planning for expansion and modularity was critical. Many of the devices had peripheral accessories and scalable hardware components.
